Thought for the Day

"Being defeated is often a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent." - Maryilyn vos Savant

In 1953, a group of Methodists began meeting at the Masonic Hall to organize a new church. On September 13, 1953 a Sunday School was started. Our church was chartered November 11, 1953. This launched a journey that would include a variety of name changes and several building projects.

In January of 1954, the Reed lots were purchased and the church took the name of Reed Memorial Church. In 1957 the Education Wing of the building was built at the Third Street Southeast location. In 1967 the sanctuary was added. By that time it became the United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids. On June 17, 2001, ground was broken on Beacon Hill to build a new facility. The congregation moved into the new building one year later on June 15, 2002. The old church was sold to a new congregation, Restoration Life Church, in July of 2002.

The United Methodist Church of Grand Rapids is a church for all seasons, honoring Christ and making disciples. Our mission is to: advance the Great Commission, model the Great Commandment, do good to all persons, seek out the last, the least, and the lost. We have added a new staff person, Director of Family Ministries to implement our vision of reaching out to children, youth and families in our community.

Members of the congregation are involved in the community through Habitat for Humanity, Kiesler House, Community Caf, Food Shelf, Salvation Army and volunteering at nursing homes. Several members have been involved in short term mission projects around the country through NOMADS. The congregation has a covenant with a missionary in the Ukraine. The past two years we have organized the Open Door Coat Rack where we collect coats from throughout the community and then distribute them to people from the area.

Our church is also associated with Action Through Churches Together (ACT)
